WanXiang “Panorama”

WanXiang
is a real-time music-visual installation by picking up the resistance signals of four kinds of plants (mushroom, cactus, bamboo and broad-leaved plant) to control four electronic instruments playing music automaticlly and randomly. Meanwhile, the sound would synchronize with the ripple animation, which is shown on four ground LED displays.

I created all the timbres by using Ableton Live and Roland AIRA system-1m semi-modular synthesizer and TR-08 drum machine.

I use Arduino Uno with ECG electrodes to detect plants’ resistance signals and compile them through the Arduino IDE. Then I use Max patch to read them in Ableton Live and map different parameters to the effector parameters of different ynthesizers (such as pitch, LFO, amplifier envelop, etc.) to achieve real-time random changes of music and create a sense of organic vitality of flow.
